Edinburgh Tattoo

(No … not a body tattoo, but a military style music show!)

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2022

Set on the Esplanade of the Edinburgh Castle, with the castle as the backdrop, the Edinburgh Tattoo performance was a sight to behold.

I must admit, when my brother Scott said he wanted to get tickets to the Tattoo, my first thought was, “Ok … maybe.” It wasn’t high on my priority list. I love a good bagpipe song. For the Tattoo I was expecting 90 minutes of marching bagpipes; and that’s about 80 minutes too long. Boy, was I ever wrong! Certainly there were some marching bagpipes; but it was so much more. There was singing, dancing, rapping, and even electro (new age) bagpipes. We were treated to Aztec Warriors dancing, the USA Air Force Honor Guard Drill Team, the USA Army Field Band, the Banda Monumental de Mexico band, and the Highland Divas in addition to at least 15 Military Pipe Bands from around the world.

Starting in 1950, the Edinburgh Tattoo has become world renowned with over 14 million visitors watching the Tattoo live. The Covid-19 pandemic cancelled the event for the last two years. But it was back on full display for 2022! I hope these pictures and short videos capture some of the splendor, pageantry, precision, choreography, and wonderful music of the Tattoo.
